Board Opening: Discourse Magazine Social Media Representative

Join Discourse as our Social Media Representative

Do you spend a little too much time thinking about Instagram posts, captions, trends, or why one Reel suddenly gets ten times more views than another?

You might be exactly who we’re looking for.

Discourse Magazine is looking for a Social Media Representative to help shape how the magazine shows up online. You’ll work alongside the Editorial Board and volunteers to share our work, promote submissions and events, celebrate contributors, and make the Discourse Instagram page feel like an extension of the magazine itself.

You do not need to be a social media expert before applying. We have content calendars, templates, process guides and existing strategies to help you get started, and there will be support while you learn the role.

What would I be doing?

The Social Media Representative helps coordinate the magazine’s Instagram presence throughout the academic year. This can include:

  • helping plan posts using the shared content calendar;
  • creating and scheduling Instagram posts, carousels, Stories and Reels;
  • writing friendly, engaging captions;
  • promoting submission periods, events and new issues;
  • sharing behind-the-scenes moments from the editorial process;
  • working with contributors, illustrators and other volunteers to showcase their work;
  • responding to comments and helping build conversation around the magazine;
  • reviewing simple Instagram analytics to see what audiences enjoy;
  • experimenting with new formats and content ideas.
  • coordinate social media activities through helping other volunteers contribute their ideas and skills.

Who might enjoy this role?

You may be a good fit if you:

  • enjoy social media, communication, writing or digital creativity;
  • like collaborating with others;
  • have ideas for making student organisations feel more approachable online;
  • are comfortable experimenting and learning as you go;
  • have an interest in literature, publishing, media, or creative communities.

What can I gain from it?

The role is a chance to gain practical experience in areas such as:

social media strategy · content creation · digital communication · copywriting · analytics · campaign planning · community management · publishing

You’ll also have the opportunity to develop work that can be included in a professional portfolio.

Interested?

Send us a short introduction telling us a little about yourself, why the role interests you and any relevant experience you would like to share.

A portfolio or examples of previous work are welcome but not required.
